One of our most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures is porcelain veneers, due to their strength, durability, and ability to cover a wide variety of imperfections in the teeth. Patients often wonder how long porcelain veneers last, as they can be a substantial upfront investment. Luckily, most porcelain veneers can last for decades with proper care.Porcelain veneers are very durable | Dr. John Schmid

Tips for Long-Lasting Porcelain Veneers

The longest lasting porcelain veneers belong to patients who have great oral hygiene and take good care of their teeth. Conversely, if you don't practice good oral hygiene habits and if you skip your biannual cleanings with us, your veneers likely won't last as long.

You can follow these tips to help keep your veneers in good shape:

  • Brush twice a day

  • Floss at least once a day

  • Avoid eating too many sugary or sticky foods

  • Avoid chewing on ice or other hard substances

  • Try to limit intake of soda, coffee, wine, and other potentially tooth-staining drinks

  • Visit Contemporary Cosmetic Dentistry every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup

While porcelain veneers don't require special care above and beyond what you would do for your regular teeth, it is very important to maintain good habits so that you don't develop decay. Tooth decay can cause veneers to loosen and come off, in addition to being bad for your normal teeth.

Porcelain veneers are bonded strongly to your teeth, but if you abuse them by eating sticky foods too often or by using them as tools to open packing, they may loosen, break, or fall off.

It is also important that you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Other reasons that veneers may come off include:

  • Teeth grinding

  • Misaligned bite

  • Not enough natural tooth enamel to bond the veneer to

If you are a chronic teeth grinder, porcelain veneers (or any other restorative dental work) don’t stand a chance. If you have bruxism but still want to get veneers, talk to Dr. Schmid about the possibility of a night guard to protect your teeth.

A misaligned bite can also be bad news for veneers, so if you have problems with your jaw alignment, Dr. Schmid will want to fix that before placing veneers. There are a number of dental treatments that can help to realign your bite.

Our Porcelain Veneers Guarantee

Porcelain veneers will sometimes come off through no fault of your own. This can happen if, for instance, you were in an accident that resulted in trauma to the jaw. If your porcelain veneers break or come off through no fault of your own within the first 5 years of placement, we will replace the affected veneers for free.

Dr. Schmid stands by his work, and he is confident that his porcelain veneers placement will be strong and secure. Many of his patients have yet to encounter a problem with their veneers, and are still going strong years later.
