Austin cosmetic dentist Dr. John Schmid offers a number of solutions for addressing cosmetic and general dental problems. Among these, porcelain veneers and dental bonding are two of the most popular.

Veneers and bonding are both used to improve teeth impacted by common cosmetic dental problems such as chips and cracks, small gaps, irregular tooth shapes and sizes, and tooth discoloration. However, each treatment offers unique benefits, and which one is right for your smile is best determined during your cosmetic dentistry consultation.

Dental Veneers

Made out of porcelain, dental veneers are placed over the front of teeth that have been marred by cosmetic imperfections. Placing porcelain veneers takes three to four weeks and will require more than one office visit.

Dental veneers are crafted offsite by our dental lab partners who take great care to match adjacent teeth in shade and shape, allowing veneers to fit unnoticeably into the smile. Once placed, they should last for several years providing adequate care is taken to protect them.

Dental Bonding

Tooth bonding is placed over the surface of teeth and can correct many of the cosmetic imperfections addressed by veneers. Shaded to match existing tooth enamel, bonding can also be used for structural issues such as broken teeth and large cavities, allowing it to serve general as well as cosmetic purposes.

Dental bonding is completed in a single office visit. Placed in layers before being hardened and shaped, the final result of this process is a natural-looking restoration that can last for several years with proper care.

It should be noted that dental bonding is not as durable as porcelain veneers and not as likely to produce absolute perfection. During your initial consultation, Dr. Schmid will carefully listen to your concerns and provide a full evaluation to help you decide on the best treatment option.
