Worn Teeth - Over time, our teeth can wear down due to grinding, erode due to acidity in foods and liquids, or even slowly wear away due to natural attrition.
Abrasion is the wearing away of tooth enamel by a foreign object. Common causes of abrasion are:
- Brushing your teeth too hard or too long.
- Fingernail biting, chewing on pens or pencils, and holding objects between teeth.
- Oral jewelry - Patients with pierced lips and/or tongue often wear away the enamel on adjacent teeth.
Bruxism - is the medical term for grinding or clenching your teeth. This condition affects both kids and adults. Often people experience the following conditions:
- Teeth that are worn down, flattened or chipped
- Have micro fracturing around the neck of the tooth causing gum recession and notching of the tooth (commonly known as abfractions)
Special thin laminates, called veneers, can often be used to correct your worn down, cracked and chipped teeth. Dr. Schmid can improve the overall health of your mouth and smile by replacing missing tooth structure with the latest, most conservative techniques.
