Austin TMJ

Austin and Round Rock, Texas

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is the name given to literally dozens of problems that can affect the proper alignment and function of your jaw. Detecting and treating TMJ is the primary focus of neuromuscular dentistry, one of the dental specialties Dr. John Schmid trained in during his time at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Now, with over a decade of practice, our Austin neuromuscular dentist uses state-of-the-art technology and modern TMJ treatments to help men and women throughout our area who suffer from this disorder restore alignment and regain full function and comfort.

Symptoms of TMJ

Symptoms of TMJ that may manifest in and around the jaw joint include:

  • Limited jaw mobility or complete lock jaw
  • Pain, swelling, or tenderness around the jaw joint
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw when opening the mouth

While TMJ is a jaw disorder, symptoms do not always occur in the jaw. Sadly, this can result in TMJ going undiagnosed for long periods of time. Some symptoms of TMJ that can occur outside of the jaw area include:

  • Ear problems - persistent pain without infection
  • Craniofacial problems - chronic headaches, often mistaken for migraines
  • Musculoskeletal problems - postural changes resulting from TMJ-related neck and back tension
  • Digestive issues - compression of the digestive organs resulting from postural changes

TMJ may also show signs inside of your mouth. These may include:

  • Uneven tooth wear
  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Bite irregularities

Dr. Schmid can determine if these problems are related to your TMJ.

Diagnosing TMJ

Many signs of TMJ can be detected during your regularly scheduled dental hygiene and teeth cleaning appointments with Dr. Schmid. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of TMJ, Dr. Schmid will combine a hands-on evaluation with dental technology such as the K7 unit to determine if TMJ is the culprit. The K7 Evaluation System uses multiple sensors to track even the most minute movements of your jaw. This comfortable and lightweight tool provides Dr. Schmid with a three-dimensional representation of your jaw joint while also mapping your optimal alignment. Dr. Schmid can use this information to determine if TMJ is present and to customize a treatment option that will meet your unique needs.

TMJ is an often painful and life-altering condition, but not one you are forced to suffer. With advanced neuromuscular dentistry techniques, Dr. Schmid can treat your TMJ and help ensure comfort and function well into the future.
