Dental Crowns

Proudly Serving Austin, Round Rock and other nearby areas in Texas

Dental crowns are used in both cosmetic and general dentistry to restore strength, function, and beauty to your smile. Sometimes called "tooth caps," dental crowns can be placed over an existing tooth that has been weakened by severe decay or impacted by things such as trauma or a root canal. They are also used as part of dental bridges and dental implants.

Austin dentist John Schmid, DDS, uses porcelain crowns whenever possible. Porcelain crowns look and feel like your natural teeth and are custom made to match adjacent teeth in shape, size, and color. However, porcelain crowns are not ideal for every situation and, because we take a comprehensive approach to your dental care, Dr. Schmid may recommend gold crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal as the situation necessitates. These options will not look as natural, but are often best for load-bearing teeth that require more support than porcelain alone can provide. The solution most suited to restore complete function will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

Dental Crown Process

Dental crowns require two visits to our practice. During your first visit, Dr. Schmid will prepare your tooth for the crown by removing a small amount of your natural tooth enamel. This provides space for the crown on either side of the tooth. Once your tooth has been prepared, Dr. Schmid will make an impression of your teeth that will be used by our dental lab partners to ensure your crown enhances rather than diminishes the strength of your bite. You will then be fitted with a temporary crown to wear until your customized crown has been created to Dr. Schmid's exact specifications.

Once your tailor-made crown is ready, you will return to our office for its placement. During this visit, Dr. Schmid will replace your temporary crown with the permanent one, checking to ensure it is sized, colored, and shaped appropriately before cementing it into place. Once your individualized crown is affixed, it will function in the exact same manner as the tooth it has replaced.

Caring for Dental Crowns

Your customized dental crowns are cared for as if they were natural teeth. Maintaining a good dental hygiene and teeth cleaning routine complete with regularly scheduled visits to our office should be sufficient to keep a dental crown strong and beautiful for years. However, your temporary crown will require some special attention to help avoid unnecessary complications.

During the period in which you have a temporary crown, you will want to:

  • Avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods
  • Refrain from using mouthwash with alcohol
  • Floss using a sliding rather than a lifting motion

Dr. Schmid will provide you with full instructions on caring for both your temporary and permanent crown during your initial consultation. Although the dental crowns we use are durable and made to last many years, you may need to replace your crown if it cracks or is otherwise damaged.
